The release of Kimi K3 has turned Moonshot AI founder Yang Zhilin into one of the newest names to watch in artificial intelligence. The Chinese entrepreneur is now being recognised globally as his company’s latest open-weight model gains attention for competing with top AI systems from the United States.
The launch has also renewed interest in Yang’s journey from academic researcher to entrepreneur. Born in 1992 in Shantou, Guangdong province, Yang studied at Tsinghua University before earning a PhD from Carnegie Mellon University, where he worked under AI researchers Russ Salakhutdinov and William Cohen.
During his doctoral studies, Yang interned at Google Brain and Meta while contributing to research on machine learning and large language models. His former mentor, Salakhutdinov, described him as “absolutely brilliant” in a post on X following the launch of Kimi K3, adding that Yang completed his PhD in just four years and was widely sought after by major technology companies.
Returned to China to build Moonshot AI
Instead of pursuing a career in the United States, Yang chose to return to China, where he worked on Huawei’s PanGu model and the Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence’s Wu Dao project. He also co-founded Recurrent AI, a startup that used artificial intelligence to analyse sales conversations and improve business performance.
Explaining his approach to AI development in an interview with journalist Xiaojun Zhang, Yang said, “If you can solve it with scale, don’t solve it with a new algorithm. The new algorithm’s value is to enable better scaling.”
Yang co-founded Moonshot AI in early 2023. The company’s Kimi K2 model first gained recognition for its ability to process long documents through a large context window. Since then, Moonshot AI has expanded into AI coding, research tools and autonomous agents while securing backing from Alibaba, Tencent and other major Chinese investors.
Kimi K3 puts Moonshot AI in the spotlight
Kimi K3 has become Moonshot AI’s biggest breakthrough so far, earning praise from several prominent names in the technology industry. Vercel CEO Guillermo Rauch said the model was the first open model to outperform proprietary systems on a comprehensive web engineering benchmark, while Wharton professor Ethan Mollick described it as the closest open model to the AI frontier.
The model’s success also reignited discussion around global AI talent. Investor Vinod Khosla argued that restrictive US immigration policies were discouraging highly skilled researchers from staying in the country. Salakhutdinov, however, said Yang had always planned to return to China to start his own company.
He also revealed that Apple had shown strong interest in recruiting Yang and was even willing to let him work from Beijing. According to Salakhutdinov, Yang believed he would regret not attempting to build his own startup, a decision his former professor said ultimately proved to be the right one.
