The Death of Robin Hood, starring Hugh Jackman as the legendary title character, is debuting on digital streaming this week after suffering a quick death at the box office.

Written and directed by Michael Sarnoski (A Quiet Place: Day One, Pig), The Death of Robin Hood opened in theaters nationwide on June 19. In the film, Robin Hood (Jackman), who feels cursed after leading a life of violent crime, is gravely wounded in a battle and seeks a chance at salvation while under the care of the mysterious Sister Brigid (Jodie Comer).

Rated R, The Death of Robin Hood also stars Bill Skarsgård, Murray Bartlett and Noah Jupe.

The Death of Robin Hood earned $2.8 million from 1,687 North American theaters in its opening weekend June 19-21 and struggled to find an audience from there. As of Sunday, The Death of Robin Hood has earned $5.3 million domestically and more than $700,000 internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $6 million.

The film had a $20 million production budget before marketing costs, according to Deadline.

To compound the film's failings at the box office, The Death of Robin Hood couldn't generate much momentum from reviews or audience reactions. Rotten Tomatoes critics gave the film a 66% “fresh†score on the site's Tomatometer based on 157 reviews.

The RT Critics Consensus for the movie reads, “Swapping out derring-do for ultraviolence, this grim take on the merry legend of Robin Hood could use more levity in its quiver, but its aim of exploring the complicated humanity behind a folk hero nails the target.â€

The Death of Robin Hood also received a “rotten†score of 56% on RT's Popcornmeter, based on 250-plus reviews. Despite the “rotten†score, RT's Audience Summary still praises the film's star. The summary reads, “While its visceral violence unfolds brutally at a punishing pace, Hugh Jackman still hits the mark in The Death of Robin Hood.â€
