The USA Men's World Cup team can move closer to qualifying for the 2027 FIBA World Cup in Qatar with victories against Chile and Colombia in the next week. The USA plays Chile on Aug. 27 in Santiago and plays Colombia on Aug. 31 in Washington, D.C., in the fourth window of FIBA Americas World Cup qualifying games.
With six games remaining in qualifying – the final two windows are in November and February – the USA is in good position to qualify for next summer's World Cup. The USA is 5-1 – its lone loss was 87-79 to the Dominican Republic – and features a team of mostly former NBA and G League players coached by former NBA coach Terry Stotts.
In the July qualifying window, the USA beat the Dominican Republic 82-81, led by Mike James' 15 points and Torrey Craig's 12 points, including the game-winning 3-pointer, and the Americans defeated Mexico 94-93 with Craig scoring 23 points and James adding 19.
The 2027 FIBA World Cup takes place Aug. 27-Sept. 12 in four Qatar cities – Doha, Al Rayyan, Lusail and Al Wakrah – and 32 teams will qualify: seven teams from FIBA Americas, seven teams from FIBA Asia/Oceana, five teams from FIBA Africa and 12 teams from FIBA Europe. Qatar automatically qualifies as the host nation.
